UTM parameters
UTM parameters are tags added to a link so analytics shows where the visit came from.
The usual set is source (the platform), medium (the type of channel) and campaign (the name of the effort). Added to a link as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, they appear in your analytics tool when someone clicks.
UTM parameters in practice
Use consistent, lowercase names, or the same traffic splits into several rows. Tag links you control, such as posts and bio links, and never tag links inside your own site because that overwrites the original source.
Agree a naming scheme before you start, for example the platform name as the source and the month plus the campaign as the campaign. Write it down, and use a builder or a template so nobody types the tags by hand.
UTM parameters in SocialPatra
SocialPatra’s RSS automation can add UTM source, medium and campaign to every link, and there is a free UTM builder for links you tag by hand.
