Best time to post on Instagram and social media
The best time to post is the window when your own followers are online and respond most, and it differs by audience, network and content.
You will not find a table of hours here. Posting-time charts average other accounts and say little about yours. This guide shows how to find your windows from your own numbers, and how to schedule into them.
Why this page gives you no times
A list of "best times" is an average over someone else's followers. Your audience has its own time zone, job and habits, and the network decides who sees a post. So the useful answer is a method: collect your own numbers, test a few windows, keep the one that wins.
Find your windows in three steps
- Read your own analytics. Open the insights of each network you post to. Several of them show when your followers are online or which posts reached the most people. Note the days and hours that repeat.
- Pick three windows and test them. For example a morning, a midday and an evening slot. Post similar content in each for four weeks, on a mix of weekdays, so one window is not judged on one busy day.
- Compare per post, not in total. Look at reach and engagement for each post and each window. Keep the window that wins most often, drop the weakest, and test a new one in its place.
Things that skew the result
- Time zones. Schedule for the time zone where most of your audience lives, not yours.
- Content type. A video and a text post do not compete on equal terms. Compare like with like.
- Small samples. Two posts in a window prove nothing. Wait for at least a handful each.
- Paid and boosted posts. Leave them out of the comparison.
- Each network on its own. A window that works on one network may not on another.
Schedule into your windows with SocialPatra
When you schedule a post, pick the accounts, then choose a date and time. The picker shows your workspace time zone next to the field, so you can check the time you set against the zone you plan for. The Find Slot button looks up the next open time for the account you selected, based on that account's posting times, and keeps a gap between posts so two do not land at once. You can still change the time by hand.
Planning many posts at once? Bulk scheduling lets you load a spreadsheet of posts with their dates and times.
How to use the best time to post guide
- Read your analytics. Open the insights of each network and note when your followers are online and which posts reached the most people.
- Test three windows. Post similar content in three different windows for four weeks, across a mix of weekdays.
- Keep the winner. Compare reach and engagement per post for each window, keep the best one and test a new window in place of the weakest.
Best time to post on Instagram
There is no single best time for every account. What you can do is test windows against your own followers. For Instagram, start here:
Where to find your own data
- In the Instagram app, open Professional dashboard, then Insights, then Total followers and Most active times. It shows the days and hours your followers are online.
- Open the insights of recent posts and reels and compare reach and saves by the time you posted.
- Switch to a professional account (business or creator) if you do not see insights. It is free.
A plan for your first month
- Week 1: post at your most active hour from Insights.
- Week 2: post two hours earlier, with similar content.
- Week 3: post two hours later, with similar content.
- Week 4: compare reach and saves per post, keep the winner, and pick a new window to test.
Different content, different timing
- Reels reach non-followers, so the follower-online hour matters less than for feed posts. Test a few windows.
- Stories live for 24 hours, so post several across the day instead of at one moment.
- Carousels are saved and revisited. Compare their reach over a few days, not a few hours.
Best time to post by day of the week
These are windows to test on each day, not statistics. We do not publish made-up engagement numbers; your own account will tell you which one wins. For India-based audiences, set your times in IST and check the time zone of your workspace before you schedule.
Monday
- People are back at work and catching up. Short, useful posts and reminders tend to fit the mood, so test a morning window before work and an evening one after.
- Windows to test: Morning commute and early evening.
Tuesday
- Often a steady day of attention. Good for your most useful post of the week, such as a how-to or a product explainer. Compare it against Wednesday with the same content type.
- Windows to test: Mid-morning and lunch break.
Wednesday
- The middle of the week is a good place to test a midday window, when people take a break and scroll. Try a carousel or reel here and compare reach with your other days.
- Windows to test: Lunch break and mid-afternoon.
Thursday
- Audiences start planning the weekend. Posts about offers, events and places can do well, so test an evening slot next to a lunch one.
- Windows to test: Lunch break and evening.
Friday
- Attention may drop during working hours and move to after work. Lighter, entertaining posts often fit. Test a late-afternoon slot against an evening one.
- Windows to test: Late afternoon and evening.
Saturday
- No commute, so habits shift later. Test a late-morning window and an evening one with relaxed content such as lifestyle, food or behind the scenes.
- Windows to test: Late morning and evening.
Sunday
- Many people scroll while planning the week. Test an afternoon window and an evening one, and try posts that invite saving, like checklists or recipes.
- Windows to test: Afternoon and evening.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to post on Instagram, LinkedIn or X?
It depends on your audience, so no single hour is right for everyone. Check the insights of each network for when your followers are active, then test windows and compare the results per post.
How long should I test a posting window?
Run each window for about four weeks and post several times in each. Two or three posts are too few to show a pattern.
Can SocialPatra choose the time for me?
When you schedule a post, the Find Slot button picks the next open time for the account you selected, based on its posting times, and keeps a gap between posts. You decide the final time and can change it.
What is the best time to post on Instagram in India?
It depends on your audience, but common windows to test are early morning, lunch and the evening, in IST. Check Most active times in your Instagram insights, then run a four-week test and keep the window that wins.
Is there a best day of the week to post?
Not one that holds for everyone. Test each day with similar content and compare reach and engagement per post. The weekday section above gives you windows to try on each day.
Does posting time matter for Reels?
Less than for feed posts, because Reels are shown to people who do not follow you. It still helps to post when your followers are active, since early reaction can help a post, so test a couple of windows.
