Mention

A mention is a post or comment that includes another account by its @handle.

The mentioned account gets a notification, which makes mentions useful for thanking customers, crediting collaborators and starting a conversation.

Mention in practice

Only tag accounts that are relevant to the post. Mass-tagging people to get attention reads as spam, and some platforms limit it. Watch your own mentions, since they are often the fastest way to find customers who need an answer.

Keep a list of the accounts you tag often and confirm the handle is spelled correctly, since a typo notifies a stranger. When someone mentions you, answer or react where it fits, and thank people who share your work in public.

Mentions can also be a risk. Decide in advance how you respond when a mention is negative or comes from someone you do not know, and who in the team is allowed to answer on the brand’s behalf.
