Engagement rate
Engagement rate is the number of interactions on a post divided by a base such as reach or followers.
The formula is interactions divided by the base, times 100. Interactions are usually likes, comments, shares and saves. The base is a choice: reach shows how well the post worked for people who saw it, followers shows how it worked for the audience you have.
Engagement rate in practice
Always say which base you used, because the same post gives different percentages under each. Compare like with like: the same platform, the same base and a similar time window.
A worked example: a post reached 4,000 people and received 120 likes, 20 comments, 10 shares and 50 saves. That is 200 interactions, so the engagement rate by reach is 5 percent. If the account has 10,000 followers, the same post is 2 percent by followers.
